Reporting Services 2016 Subscriptions Error - "An error has occurred. Something went wrong. Please try again later."
by BF (Principal Consultant; Architecture; Engineering)
2017-12-12

Report Manager: "An error has occurred. Something went wrong. Please try again later." - this error was occurring immediately when going to Settings and My Subscriptions.

Reporting Services Error Log:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSRS13.MSSQLSERVER\Reporting Services\LogFiles

File:
Microsoft.ReportingServices.Portal.WebHost_12_11_2017_08_24_50

Error:
Microsoft.ReportingServices.Portal.WebHost!library!437!12/11/2017-09:47:00:: e ERROR: Throwing Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.ServerConfigurationErrorException: Email Provider has no server or pickup directory specified, Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.ServerConfigurationErrorException: The report server has encountered a configuration error.

Fix:

SQL Server 2016 Reporting Services Configuration Manager:

Email Settings:

1. Set the fields for Sender Address, SMTP Server and Authentication(we use Report server service account (NTLM)
2. Re-start Reporting Services from the Configuration Manager
3. Go to Report Server URL and all the Subscriptions should be available.

Note:

When getting errors with little details in reports, extra error information is displayed when running the report from the actual Report Server where Reporting Services Configuration Tool is installed. Sometimes an embedded Data Source can have the same name as a Shared Data Source for example and extra error information can make it easier to solve the issue. Checking the Report itself and it's Data Source will indicate that also.
